Registered Swimming Pool Inspector Training Course

Completion of this course will enable eligible candidates to apply for registration as a Swimming Pool Inspector with the Department of Fair Trading under the Building and Development Certifiers Act 2018 allowing the successful applicant to undertake Swimming Pool Barrier Inspections and issue Certificates of Compliance against the required legislation.

Unit 1: Course introduction and child drowning statistics

Unit 2: New South Wales swimming pool legislation framework

Unit 3: Locate and interpret regulatory requirements for Swimming Pool Inspectors

Unit 4: The role of the NSW Department of Fair trading

Unit 5: Swimming Pool Inspectors and the law

Unit 6: Roles and Responsibilities of Swimming Pool Inspectors

Unit 7: Pools and Barriers

Unit 8: Conduct a pool compliance inspection and certification

Certification

Students who are deemed competent will receive a Certificate of Completion issued by Building UpSkills (BUS)

Entry Requirements

Nil to undertake the training, however if you wish to apply for a grant of registration as a Swimming Pool Inspector through the Department of Fair Trading you are required to meet certain criteria to be eligible to apply. Please note preferential enrolment will be given to those who are eligible to apply to become a Registered Swimming Pool Inspectors. See below and the Department of Fair Trading website for more details.

Course Location

The course is delivered online (Study in the comfort of your own home or workplace) and a practical one-on-one assessment is required to be attended in Engadine, NSW. This assessment usually takes an hour or two.

Enrolment Pathways

There are three pathways for the grant of registration as a Swimming Pool Inspector.

Pathway 1

(a) Qualifications
Registration as a building inspector that is not subject to a condition that limits the certification work the holder can carry out and satisfactory completion of—
  1. training approved by the Secretary within 12 months before the application for registration is made, and
  2. an exam conducted by the Secretary within 6 months before the application for registration is made.
(b) Experience
None required

Pathway 2

(a) Qualifications
Endorsed contractor licence or a supervisor certificate under the Home Building Act 1989 that enables the holder to construct a swimming pool or to construct structural landscaping and satisfactory completion of—
  1. training approved by the Secretary within 12 months before the application for registration is made, and
  2. an exam conducted by the Secretary within 6 months before the application for registration is made,
(b) Experience
None required

Pathway 3

(a) Qualifications
Satisfactory completion of Swimming Pool Inspector Training Course provided by Building UpSkills or the College of Professional Development.
(b) Experience
2 years recent experience working for a local council carrying out certification work under the Swimming Pools Act 1992 on behalf of the local council and have carried out that certification work on not less than 20 swimming pools.

  4. Optional: Complete the Learner Support Resource
  5. Receive Log in information to access the learning and assessment materials
  6. Register to use the Learner forum
  7. Login and start your course - stop and resume any time. Allow minimum 28 hours (enrolment period is up to 6 months)
  8. Complete written tasks for units 1-8
  9. Complete a Statutory Declaration and Identification process to verify your identity and return by post to BUS or bring with you to your practical assessment
  10. Organise your practical assessment
  11. Attempt the practical assessment
  12. Complete Learner feedback questionnaire
  13. Be issued with a Certificate of Completion upon successful completion
  14. Apply for a grant of registration as a Swimming Pool Inspector to the Department of Fair Trading if you are not already an A1, A2, A3 Certifier
  15. Join the Swimming Pool Register by emailing your Registration number to sprusers@olg.nsw.gov.au (Office of Local Government)

Delivery and Assessment

BUS will provide delivery of the course training materials and assessment of your answers. BUS is responsible for compliance of the training and assessment of this course, and for issuing results documents to learners who attain a competent result. Should BUS close or cease to trade during your enrolment period, you will be refunded 100% of your enrolment fees.
